A 'sudden burst of smoke' and strange odor on board an American Airlines flight forced it into an emergency landing.
The New York-bound flight leaving from Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday was just one hour and 36 minutes into the scheduled 5:17 a.m. ET. landing.
Terron Austin, a passenger on board, tweeted that the Airbus A321 was diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport - 372 miles east of LAX. His full tweet read: 'So...we're having an emergency landing in #Phoenix on my 9PM PST flight from #LA to #NYC.
'Sudden burst of smoke followed by an announcement to immediately prepare for landing. We weren't even two hours in the air yet. Flight 10 on @AmericanAir.'
The American Airlines account responded, saying: 'We'll have you back int he air shortly. Thanks for hanging in there with us.'
American Airlines confirmed the diversion and It said in a statement that there was 'an odor' on board and that staff members were investigating reports of smoke. Source
