Five dead, one missing and 10 injured after two tourist planes crash in mid-air over Alaska
At least five people are dead, one is missing and 10 have been injured after two sightseeing planes carrying passengers from a Royal Princess cruise ship collided in mid-air in Alaska. The two planes crashed over water near the southeast Alaska town of Ketchikan on Monday at about 1pm. A team of federal accident investigators is expected to arrive in Alaska on Tuesday to try to piece together what caused the deadly collision. All 14 passengers on board the two planes were tourists from the cruise ship Royal Princess, which was on a seven-day trip from Vancouver to Anchorage. Flightseeing company Taquan Air was operating one of the flights and was carrying 11 people on its single-engine de Havilland Otter DHC-3. The operator of that plane said its pilot and nine passengers were rescued and were receiving medical attention in a Ketchikan hospital. One passenger's fate was unknown. Five people aboard the second plane - a single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver - were all killed. Four of those were cruise ship passengers and the fifth person was the pilot. The number of fatalities was confirmed by a Princess Cruises spokesperson. The U.S. Coast Guard has only confirmed four deaths so far. Source
