Myanmar plane crash: 'At least twelve killed' after military aircraft incident
AT LEAST twelve people have been killed following a military plane crash in Myanmar, a city fire department has said.Security forces arrived on the scene shortly after the incident which occurred on Thursday morning. The 16 seater plane went down between a power and steel plant in Pyin Oo Lwin in the Mandalay region.A local on the ground said that eight further people were injured.
Local media has not yet confirmed the deaths, although it was initially reported that senior military officers were among the dead. Rescue is currently underway.
Some media outlets have reported that six military officers and two monks were on board the aircraft.The aircraft was flying from the capital city, Naypyidaw, to the town of Pyin Oo Lwin, but crashed when coming into land approximately 300 metres from the airport.The pilot and one passenger survived the crash and have been taken to a military hospital, according to a resident and a post by a community group.
It is not clear what caused the crash.
Photographs on social media showed a badly damaged fuselage lying on its side.
The crash follows fears from the UN that the country is headed towards a humanitarian crisis after the nation recorded thousands of civilian deaths as a result of starvation and disease. Source
